Lake City
Lake City is a sleepy little mountain town located approximately 60 miles south of Gunnison and is located in Hinsdale County. It was a booming mining town 6 years before Gunnison was even began to develop as a central supply center for many mining camps in the territory.
The boom years lasted from 1876-1881, and suffered a collapse when costs became too expensive to transport out of the area, winters closed down access to the area and the narrow gauge railroad construction was halted because of the lack of finances. fish, hunt, horseback ride, cross country ski and snowshoe.
Powderhorn
Another town located between Gunnison and Lake City is Powderhorn. Powderhorn is most know for the grassy meadows, water resources, hunting and cattle ranching than mining. The Ute Indians were the first occupants in the territory and stayed as long as they could until the prospectors and trappers forced them out. Every October, many of the cattle that roamed the Powderhorn meadows, were put on trains to Denver for slaughtering
One of Powderhorn’s amenities is the Cebolla Hot Springs. The Ute Indians were the first to experience the hot springs and swore by their medicinal qualities when it came to aches and pains.
