Mt. Crested Butte is home to the Crested Butte Mountain Resort which provides awesome skiing and riding in the winter and mountain biking and hiking in the summer and the internationally renowned Rocky Mountain Biological Lab that occupies the previously abandoned mining town of Gothic.
The Rocky Mountain Biological Lab was founded in 1928 in the abandon mining town of Gothic. Since then, thousands of students and scientists have studied the diverse eco-systems within the area and have provided scientific research and education to the world.
The ski area came to fruition back in 1958, when Dick Elfin and Fred Rice came to town in search of a place to build a winter recreational area. They fell in love with Crested Butte and purchased a ranch in Mt. Crested Butte to begin their dream of creating a ski resort. Crested Butte Mountain Resort began spinning chairs in December 1960 and one of the first lifts included a T-Bar.
The town of Mt. Crested Butte became incorporated in 1973 and has its own zip code and town counsel.
The dream to build a winter recreational area that was specifically all about downhill skiing, has become a year round outdoor mecca for sports enthusiasts as well as a laid back lifestyle.
